Consider Australia, where minority parties hold seats in both houses of parliament and can vote on the laws that govern the country because the 6-7% of votes that went their way are counted.
In the election held just last week, a minority party that polled only 50,000 primary votes out of a nation of 11 million voters won one of the 76 seats in the upper house. Not only that, but the winning party needed 1 more seat for an absolute majority. This means the minority candidate holds the balance of power in the upper house through which all legislation needs to pass to become law!
That is the power of preferential voting.
Yeah fuck the electoral college! ROCK!
